Eye Allergies Causes and Treatments
from:If someone says “allergy” to you, thoughts of an itchy runny nose would probably be the first thing you think of. This is caused by irritation of the nasal and sinus cavities, but, these annoying conditions can also invade the eyes and lead to symptoms like itchy and watery eyes which can become red and swollen.
The good news is that a great many eye allergies can be effectively treated with medications which are available at the local pharmacy. With eye allergies it can be helpful to try and follow the principle of prevention as cures can take some time.
But before we discuss how to treat them, it is important to understand why they occur.
Causes
It is not actually surprising that so many people suffer from the effects of allergy symptoms as eye allergies are quite common. Eyes are one of the most exposed parts of our body and are in full contact with the environment and its allergens all day. Unlike the nose where the nasal passages contain cilia, which are tiny hairs that filter out many of the offending particles, the eyes don’t have a built in protection system and therefore are at a higher risk from harmful substances that we come into contact with daily.
It is generally believed that from the total number of allergy sufferers of one type or another, nearly half will also suffer from eye allergies. People who experience seasonal allergy symptoms, such as hayfever, have a higher change of also getting eye allergies.
You might also have an increased risk of allergies to this area if you have atopic dermatitis or a family history of allergies. The good news is that there are options for treating eye allergies, so that you can find comfort once again.
Treatment
Prevention is always the best way to treat potential eye allergies, and its helpful to avoid known triggers such as dog or cat hairs. Not touching or rubbing your eyes is obvious and especially if your hands have been in contact with a known allergen. Sometimes rubbing eyes can bring on an allergic reaction.
If the methods of prevention and avoidance of your allergy triggers fails to bring relief from your itchy, watery eyes, there are very good medications available as well. See your local Pharmacist as they may be able to recommend a solution. If your eye allergies are still persistant, then you should consult your doctor.
Most of these medicines are allergy eye drops that can be used once or twice each day and often can relieve the soreness very quickly.
Eye allergies can be difficult to cope with, but there are ways to reduce and even eliminate uncomfortable eye allergy symptoms. Talk to your doctor today about the best choices in allergy treatments for you.
